Astrophotography
From CVAS Member Laszlo Ilyes
The "Leo Triplet" is a cluster of galaxies in the constellation Leo. It is comprised of galaxies designated M65, M66, and NGC 3628. At this time of year (late April) the cluster is near the meridian at nightfall, making it a good subject to shoot on a clear night.
I shot this image through a 2350mm focal length telescope whose field of view is too narrow to capture all three galaxies at once, so I photographed it over several nights as a 4-panel mosaic. I then used software to splice the 4 separate panels into this one single image.
Unfortunately, Facebook does not allow me to post the original high-resolution mosaic because the file size is excessive. So I had to down-sample it considerably in order to share it with you. But even in this reduced resolution image, you'll see some nice details in the reddish-brown dust lanes that ripple through all three deep-sky objects.
